🎨 Look of the barcode

The quiet zone is the blank space each side of the symbol, measured in bar widths. Scanners need it. Ten is the safe figure for Code 128 and Code 39, so do not drop it to squeeze a long code onto a small label. Use a shorter code or a bigger label instead.

SVG is the one to send to a printer or a designer, because it is drawing instructions rather than pixels, so it stays sharp at any size. Pick a PNG size at least as big as you will print it. Word, Excel and Google Docs all take PNG; Illustrator, InDesign and most print shops prefer the SVG.

A bulk barcode generator that finishes the job

Most free barcode sites hand back one image and leave you to work out how to get thirty of them onto a sheet of labels in register. This page does the other half. Paste a list or load a CSV, pick your sheet, and you get a PDF laid out at the exact millimetre offsets Avery publishes, with the bars drawn as vector shapes rather than a pasted picture. Nothing on that sheet is rasterised, so the symbol prints at whatever resolution your printer has instead of at the roughly 96 dots per inch a browser screenshot would give you. That single detail is why label sheets from free tools so often refuse to scan. The PNG download is pixels, as any PNG is, which is why it offers sizes up to 8x.

Avery 5160 barcode labels, and the other sheets

Built in: Avery 5160 and 8160 (three across, ten down, 2.625 by 1 inch), 5161 and 8161, 5163 and 8163, 5164 and 8164, Avery L7160 on A4, and the common A4 twenty four up sheet at 70 by 37 mm. If your stock is not on the list, the custom option takes columns, rows, label size, margins and pitch in millimetres and lays out anything on a grid. Part used a sheet already? Which barcode type to pick

Code 128 is the right default for anything internal: SKUs, asset tags, bin locations, work orders. It takes letters and numbers and packs them tightly. Code 39 is older and longer for the same data, but some legacy scanners and government forms still ask for it. EAN-13 and UPC-A are the retail codes you see on shop shelves, and you cannot invent one: the number has to be issued to you through GS1 or your barcode will collide with somebody else's product. ITF-14 goes on outer cases and cartons. Codabar still turns up in blood banks and libraries. Check digits for EAN, UPC and ITF-14 are worked out for you, and if you type the full number yourself it is checked and you are told the right digit when it is wrong.

Will it actually scan

The measurement that decides that is the X dimension, the width of the narrowest bar. This page calculates it for your chosen sheet and tells you before you print, in millimetres and in mil. Roughly: above 0.33 mm is comfortable for any handheld scanner, 0.264 mm is the GS1 minimum for a retail till, and below about 0.19 mm you are gambling. If the figure comes out too small the fix is a shorter code or a bigger label, never a smaller quiet zone. Print on matt label stock rather than gloss, keep the bars black on white if you can, and do not scale the PDF in the print dialog.

Where your data goes

Your codes, your CSV and the files you download stay in this tab. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, and a CSV you load is read in the browser, never uploaded. Two things do leave. The page fetches four libraries when it loads, for barcodes, PDF, ZIP and CSV reading, from two public CDNs, the same as any other site. And it records the page address for visitor counts, plus, each time you download something, which button you pressed and how many codes were in that run. Your codes and your captions are never part of that count.

What this replaces

Label software like BarTender Starter runs a few hundred dollars a year, mostly for the part that lays codes onto a sheet in register and merges them from a spreadsheet. If that is all you need, this does it for nothing. What it does not do is drive a Zebra or other thermal printer directly in ZPL, manage a shared label template library, or print serialised GS1 application identifiers, so if you live in a warehouse all day the paid tools still earn their money.
